This will not be the name of my as-yet hypothetical far-future son:

Worcestershire Haggis Och.

...Sadly, Best Beloved has vetoed this. Probably for the best, really.

So Best Beloved and I were chatting over dinner, which was baked potatoes, and we appear to have decided that Lord of the Rings would have been a) much shorter and b) much funnier if it had been Lord of the Potatoes, and Sauron, like, grew the Nine Potatoes for the Mortal Men and the One Potato to rule them all and then Final Battle Mark I went down and Gollum found the One Potato and then The Hobbit happens and Bilbo keeps the Potato in his pocket for years (and it is magic and does not rot or sprout) and the Frodo brings it to the Council of Elrond and everyone thinks they have to go all the way to Mordor to drop it in a volcano...

And, see, everyone thinks potatoes are poisonous because why else would Sauron have used them for his Objects of Power...

And then Sam hops out of the bushes and is all like, "Oh hey what a beautiful potato I will fry it up for breakfast for Master Frodo!"

And everyone else is all like, "But it is the One Potato! And poisonous!"

And Sam gives them the look of the offended gardener and goes, "Potatoes aren't poisonous, they're delicious," and slices up the One Potato and fries it with some herbs and serves it to Frodo for breakfast-in-bed because poor Frodo is still recovering from a Morgul-blade.

And it is delicious. The End.

So I adore Sherlock Holmes; he is a wonderful character and the books are wonderful and Dr. Watson is all kinds of adorable and I want one. I also quite like the BBC's Sherlock; it seems to me to be a decent adaptation of the original works into modern London.

I will not be watching Elementary for one reason: because every review I've seen says that Joan Watson is not the competent, war-tested, even-tempered, highly intelligent doctor that Dr. Watson should be. Yes, ok, Dr. Watson doesn't solve the cases. That's because he's not Sherlock Holmes, because no one else is Sherlock Holmes. That doesn't mean he's incompetent or stupid; it just means he isn't Sherlock Holmes. He's a very talented doctor, he's a good man, he's a soldier with a soldier's skills in fighting, he's immensely patient and astonishingly good-natured, given what he has to put up with! He is good at his job. He just isn't Sherlock Holmes.

So any Watson that modern adaptations provide had better be a brave, competent, highly intelligent ex-military doctor, because that's who Watson is, regardless of gender.

I've been spending some time trying to get most of my stories up on AO3. Nowhere near done, of course. It's not that I'm not prolific, it's that I'm not organized!

But anyhow the short version is, there's more than 80 of my stories up on AO3, so if it's not on this blog it's probably over there.

Occasionally I have travel nightmares. You know, lost my ticket, missed my plane, not packed and it's time to leave. Standard stuff.

They do not usually involve my having to translate a page of Old English poetry relating to the Matter of Britain in order to prove I know what I'm talking about when I say the Danes are attacking England.

...My brain, it is a strange place to live.

So last night I finished reading Dragonsong to my fiance (I read, he does the dishes, everyone is happy), and despite his utter and complete lack of slash goggles, we both agreed on two pairings: Elgion/Alemi and Menolly/Robinton. (My personal OT3 is Sebell/Menolly/Robinton, but we haven't gotten to Sebell yet.)

So now my headcanon is that Alemi takes over as Sea Holder when Yanus dies, and he and Elgion make Half-Circle the most LGBT friendly Hold on Pern. Because they are adorable.

I can't say anything about this in Real Life until Sunday night at the earliest but I'm going to go mad if I can't say something - I'm engaged! Best Beloved proposed! I am full of squee and warm fuzziness, and so very very happy.

...Er. Smut to resume shortly.

Went to see Conan the Barbarian today. It was, as expected, gloriously silly - lots of unrealistic swordfighting and glowering and magical monsters, all very fun - and, to my utter astonishment, it passes the Bechdel test. There are only two named female characters (though, to be fair, there are only about five named characters total), and they have a conversation which is not even a little bit about a man. I am astounded and pleased!

...Also, yay pulpy fantasy fun. Wheee!
