Oh, I know that, and in my saner moments I know it's a good thing we don't all like, say, broccoli, or the world would become stultifying. But I do think that the basic literacy thing is deeply important, and more than that, that literature/writing contributes something to the human condition that skiing, perhaps, does not. (Music, now - music is probably just as important. Though other creatures have music but not writing. So...eh. I dunno.)
Voracious reading, I grant you, is probably always going to be, and always should be, a less common pleasure, because otherwise we'd all be holed up in libraries and nothing would ever get done.
